wheel bearing?

I have 96 chevy 1/2 ton that I am told has a bad wheel bearing. I can grab the top and bottom of the tire and rock it up and down a bit. Is that the bearings. If so is it a do it yourselfer I have never done one.Do ya need any special tools. Some giudance and tips/info would be appreciated thanks

Three bolts hold it on sometimes they are torx sometimes just regular bolts. The axle nut is a 34 or 36 mm. They can be quite a challenge to separate from the knuckle especially after they have rusted in there. The most important thing is to buy a quality bearing and torque the ax,e nut to the proper spec. Failure to do either can lead to premature bearing failure!

There's a pretty good set of directions in the equipment thread about repacking wheel bearings. Check it out. Do both sides while you're at it since they're the same age/number of miles. Don't wait to do this if things are as bad as they sound.

As far as I know, trailer wheel bearings are not the same as automotive wheel bearings. If they're essentially the same, I recently wasted a bunch of money.
