I thought about this thread last night after I lost what I believe to be a very big fish

I had my channel cat rod out on the deeper edge current seam. nowhere near snags or anything. It isn't a pool cue by any means, but I've caught 60-70lb sturgeon on it before, so i know it's adequate for a flat if one happens to pick up the piece cutbait........wrong!

I heard my clicker go off, so I set the hook and instantly the fish digs down hard and I can't turn it at all. It goes straight under the boat towards shore and heads upstream. Here I am with the rod doubled over the transom trying to fight the thing and I'm losing terribly. I actually had to hit freespool as I was afraid my rod might break.

Sure enough, he found his way right into a snag and was able to pull the hook off.

I guess the moral of the story is that is sucks to be undergeared when a big mamma decides to eat your bait. I might have had a chance to turn her if I would have had my flathead rod out there.

Its a sinking feeling when you can turn a fish I know that all to well as it happened to me this year the weekend after I caught my PB and I was using my big flat rod. sinker hit snag and pop felt the fish go free.... I will be in search of that fish until I fish no more.
