Plan on picking up a laptop and want to use it in parts of the state without WiFi. What are my options and are they expensive?

Check out the no contract modems from Verizon (best coverage) and others at Best Buy Mobile. They work on the 3g network.

Go to Verizon's HSOforum and they have a lot of different plans that deal with mobile broadband.

I have a Verizon/PanTech UM190 cellular modem. Works good in 3G areas, you'll need patience in non-3G areas if you're use to high-speed access.

What exactly are you looking for with the laptop?

Also, do you already have service with Verizon for cell phone?

I picked up a netbook from Verizon for $30 ($130 with $100 rebate debit card) last winter right before Christmas.

It's got a built in modem and works off of Verizon's service.

It'll work great anywhere that I've been since then.

The biggest drawback is that since it's a netbook, it doesn't have a dvd/cd drive to install or add programs. You have to add them through a USB card or download them from the internets.

I pay $50 / month for 5 gb of internet access, but the most I've ever had was 950 mb and I surf quite a bit (no video, not much pic download) but alot of forums during the month.

I also use logmein.com which allows me to access my desktop at home while I'm on the road to do paperwork and print things at home.

It also depends on what part of the state you plan on using it. Verizon is spotty up here. I had to dump them and go with AT&T for my blackberry cuz way too many places it won't work.
