I'd have them check to see if it could be covered under their auto insurance or home owners insurance. I know some auto insurance policies cover trailers while attached to the auto, but I'm not sure if that would transfer up to the boat as well.

Sadly I base a lot of my borrowing on ability to repay. My dad asked if he could borrow my snowmobile and I told him sure (even though he already has a couple of his own). My sister heard us talking and asked if she could ride it too. I told her no way. She asked why. I said because if he crashes he'll buy me a new one, if you crash you'll feel bad and say sorry.

I do everything in my power not to borrow stuff from other people. It just always seems to break while in my possession. Cheaper just to go buy my own. My own stuff rarely breaks.

Personally I don't think it's reasonable to ask them to pay for the entire damage out of their pocket. I think they should pay the dedcuctible and any increase in his insurance rate.

I agree with bturck that there is a very good chance they won't increase the premium. I've been an agent 27 years and we don't increase the premium for this. However he is "spot-on" regarding the possibility of non-renewal should there be another incident in the next couple years.

Deitz- Any chance I can borrow your boat this weekend??

I don't borrow much out either. You would think if someone borrows something, they would take extra good care of it, but I find that rarely happens. And sometimes, they sit on it like they think it is their own, and you have to go ask to get YOUR stuff back. The human race, tough to figure out.
