Minn kota trolling motor not turning right

Jarnotski

Question

At high speeds my power drive does not want to turn to the right, sometimes even at lower speeds it will take a long time to turn right and always turns much slower compared to turning left. Batteries are always charged. Ideas? Thanks.

I have had this problem quite a few times. I would say more than likely, your foot pedal is going out. Dirt and debris get under the contact tabs and eventually, with pressure, a friction hole is created in the circuit board. Water and moisture will make its way into the circuit board causing it to short out.

I take mine apart once a month now and clean the contact tabs and circuit board. I also make sure that I disconnect the pedal during trailering and keep it in an area out of the elements.

Definitely foot pedal. Best bet is to buy a new one. I have never had much luck cleaning them. It usually helps for a little while, but will come back. I have been thru several PD pedals and the sad thing is my boat is usally stored inside. Maybe its my bad luck with them, but I have seen some on resort boats in Canada that are so faded by the sun they are almost white colored, and still going strong. Last one I bought was around $75 I believe.

These foot pedals are notoriously ignored when it comes to maintenance. Dirt on your shoes, dust during travel, etc. will congregate inside the pedal controls and cause things to not function.

It sounds like the slider may not be sliding smoothly in one direction. Probably due to dirt buildup. I have found a small amount of grease has been used as a lubricant here and I think this is a mistake. Grease likes to collect dirt and dry out over time. Take it apart and clean the slider really good. I usually use WD-40 and a towel to get the dirt off all the moving parts. WD-40 is a lubricant but also displaces water. Spray it down, work it back and forth and wipe of the crud until it's clean. Carefully try to get a paper towel under the contact tabs to clean out any dirt there as well.

Might be all it takes.
