Boar
It's a great education tool, I dont know everything, far from it, but i have to give input an welcome being corrected if wrong or oppossed on opinions cause I'm costantly needing to learn more. Hugely passionate about bear hunting, wish i could make a living at it. The ony thing that diverts my attenton from bear hunting for a breif nmoment is icefishing. lichen fox
bog...I agree pits are a bad thing when it gets wet... we have even had to move a bait a few feet because the bears dig such huge holes trying to get the last of the grease & honey soaked into the ground...we never dig pits, on public or private land but what I was getting at is I don't see anything in the bear or regular regulation books relating to "digging" other than it is illegal on "federal lands"...WPA's,Scenic & Natural areas, National refuges etc...because they don't want natural plants "disturbed" by people... lichen fox
Bogwalker...I think I finally figured the digging a pit thing out....I'm sure there is a rule pertaining to "digging a pit" to "take" a big game animal...(or perhaps any protected species)...but that rule refers to digging a BIG pit that the animal could fall into and be trapped...so, you can't dig a big hole on the bears trail to capture him when you're not there...but, if you would like too, you can dig a small impression and fill it with goodies for him to eat! Boar Boar, you might not be able to make a living at it, but you are a pro. I saw the pic of the bear you got last year. I only wish some day I will get a crack at a bear like that. Keep up the good work!
bogwalker
lichen fox, I remember when I started deer hunting with my big brother. We hunted by Little fork back then. He showed me a pit right next to a deer trail It resembled a grave and was about 6 feet deep. A bow hunter would stand or sit in this hole and shoot up at the deer. How would you like to try this for bear?
Boar
Thanks nik. i aprreciate the comment. Good luck this year. My luck sitting in a pit like that, a bear would probabley releive himself right there. When a pit gets big enough a person just need to stuff some branches down in the pit to hold the bait up a water to run through. Hey Fox? whats the bear numbers like up there? Do ya mind me asking where from New Folden do ya hunt? Boar
Random guy
A bow hunter would stand or sit in this hole and shoot up at the deer. How would you like to try this for bear? NO way in heck. Sure enough I would look like one big tastey grub...and where to do you run/hide? I don't even like sitting on the ground.
lichen fox
Bogwalker...I'm with Jonny on that one...I prefer to hunt from a tree...I've had my share of up close encounters with wounded bears...sows with cubs, etc in 20 years of bear hunting....that being said, about 15 years ago, my partner made some noise while a bear was on the bait and spooked the bear up a tree about 10 yards from his tree...he made a great uphill shot with his bow and the bear only made it about 10 yards after he hit the ground! The main reason I wouldn't like to hunt from the ground is I've seen on several occassions how all heck can sometimes break loose when a smaller bear is on a bait and Mr big comes in...they head up trees...one time running right into the bottom of my stand...they run like the dickens... and with my luck they'd probably run right over me! Boar...I haven't hunted that area for about 20 years, but my brother and some other locals hunt it...my brother has baits in the area of our hunting camps east of Viking and he also runs some baits up in New Maine township north of Newfolden.... Aug_01
Here is a pic I found online of what they called a crib. I can see how it would lead to a nice shot angle on th bear, but I had imagined that the logs would cover the bait as well. Am I correct? Boar
I guesse it depends on if you want them to, That is a an almost perfect pen to lead a bear into to feed but it also look like the logs woould block a bow shot from being piled to high. If a bear had opend the pen the logs would be all over every which way. My partner I collect bait with has been hunting bear for many years an is confident to just dump buckets of bait on open ground. My self I would be adding a couple two tp three big logs right on top or maybe some brush then the big logs. Boar
