Biting Bullheads.... Time to feed them (Video)

Larry, what kind of pumps do you use to pump the water? Last year I used a pool filter and pump assy. It lasted all year. This year, I have burnt out 3 of them. I am running out of friends that have spare pool filter/pumps. I need to find a better fix, or figure out what I am doing different this year.

I'm using the pool pumps as well, I've never burned any out. I'll be making another video soon that will explain how I'm running a series of pumps and filters. 3 pumps and one aqua clear. I'm trying to incorporate some live plants to help with chemical filtration.

Here are a few things that you need to watch out for when using.

1. Make sure that you don't have air in the pump.

2. You need a good prime, you can tell if its cavitating by the amount of noise it makes.

3.Make sure all your seals and gaskets are good, grease them up, I use dielectric silicone.

4. Some times you have to invert the pump to get all air removed.

5. I would use caution using the filters that that come with the pumps. Your almost better off leaving the filter out and setting up a basket filter at the end of the line, so the filters never clog up to the point of burning the pump out.

I have spare pumps if you need, I'd trade for a trip out with you some time. I wouldn't mind spending a night on the water talking shop if your up for it. I know its a busy time for you for a spell, keep it in mind.

I found/took a pond/fountain pump from my wife's fountain that she never plugs in anyhow. And rigged that to work. I will see how long this one lasts. I think last years pool pump burnt up because of the filter, so I didnt use one in these last two pumps. I think the second one got tipped over and someone picked it back up, and didnt realize it stopped pumping, and the last one, the hoses leaked a little around the seal on the pump, so I think it just slowly lost its prime.

The fountain pump I found sitting in the yard, I think will work great, I can even adjust the flow, it is like a sump, and sits in the water. I have my tank set up pretty simple. I use a 100 gallon stock tank, I keep it under my deck, so it is shaded, this year I ran the rain gutter drains to drain into it, and I drilled a hole a couple inches from the top, hooked a short garden hose to it, and I get a fresh flush of rain water every time it rains. I run a double stone aerator, that has a battery back up built into it. This year I also made a filter assy out of a 5 gallon bucket. I drilled a bunch of holes about a 1/4 of the way from the bottom of the bucket, I used your sugguestion of cut up plastic bottles in the bottom of the bucket, then I used 3 furnace filters on top of that, I run the pump hose into the top of the bucket with a lid on it, and the bucket filters the water, I think there is some bacteria growing in the bucket as well, to help with the water. When the pump is running the water stays clean, and doesnt smell at all, I havent had to treat it at all this year. When the pump fails, it only takes a couple days for the water to get dirty, and smell fishy.

I will gladly spend some time on the water with you this summer, and I will have more free time come July, then I will be hitting it hard. If you have any mechanical questions, dont be afraid to email me, or just give me a call.

Sounds like a pretty sweet set up Scott...

You got my interest in the battery powered back up Airaetor, give me a brief rundown when you get a chance. I don't loose power often but if I did.... DOAH

Make a movie if you get a chance.

If ya can't tell I like movies... grin

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
