I would look at getting a longer heavier rod and it could double as a lighter bucktail rod for muskies as well. If you do go that route, make sure you get a bass rod that will double as a light musky rod, not a musky rod that will double as a heavy bass rod.

I X2,X3 what Cecil and RK said. My parents live just down the bay from you in Moonlight Bay. You truly need two baits and cecil covered it...Jawbreaker (white) and Frog (white), 50lb braid and you become a threat to any largemouth bass. Steamboat is a great sourch without going to far. Start with the rice and cover water real early in the morning and at dark-thirty. I'll be up there around the 24th and 25th and then over the 4th if you want to chase some bass together?

I do the fundraising and PR stuff for Leech Lake Tribal College, just outside of Cass Lake. It's only about 15 min from work to home, so could be out on the water by 5=ish. You said evening is a good time to find a bass bite?

MR - no problem. My brother's got some leave time (he's in the Army down at Ft Riley, KS) the first week of July, and I know he would love to go bass fishing. If you're around the week of the 4th, maybe the three of us can head out. Keep me posted.

Second that. Grab 2 rods both broomsticks. One with a jawbreaker spoon, the other with a topwater frog. Rice should be getting close to enough cover, although some sun would do wonders for shallows right now. Steamboat has plenty of water to fish for them.

I second that! Was out there on a club tourney last year. First time on the lake and first time throwing a frog and it was phenominal bass fishing. One of my favorite days fishing ever.

OK, I'm heading to Reeds after work to buy a telephone pole and a baitcaster. I assume with the heavier gear, I'll need somewhat heavier lures as well if I'm going to cast more than about 10 feet - is that right? What size(s) of frogs, Jawbreakers etc should I look for, and what colors are good to start with?

Solid colors like black or white are best. They contrast the cover better and fish can find them.

Well, I got a little firsthand experience with what you guys were talking about. Yesterday after work I went after some sunnies in a patch of bullrushes, pitching a little jig & worm with a med-light walleye rod. I had a beautiful bass hit - probably 20" or so - and I never had a chance. I tried to steer him away from the weeds, but he dove down to the bottom of the rushes, and I had zero chance to get him out. Zero.

I'm definitely going to Reeds to pick up some heavier artillery today. It sucked losing a nice fish like that!

Picked up some new gear, and headed out a couple of times this weekend with minimal success. I definitely need to fish with someone who knows what they're doing to show me the ropes! The biggest excitement was having about a 36" pike follow my lure to the boat yesterday.

just got back from Leech Lake from fishing and did very well in the boy and headquarters area. I'm taking Friday off and going up early taking the kids but if I can get grandma to watch the kids that day we could hook up, can you manage a couple hours during the day? I have a few spots we can try in Steamboat that I think should kick out a few for us, are you available anytime on Friday?

I have a medium-heavy bass rod with a baitcaster, and a heavy rod with a baitcaster but I've never tried it for anything other than muskie stuff. I bought a bunch of bass stuff that the fellas at Reeds recommended - a couple frogs, Jawbreakers etc. If you let me know what I need, I'll let you know if I have it (or I can go get it). I plan on doing a lot of bass fishing, so if there's something I need to run pick up that's no problem.
