Gas or diesel and general do all truck?

Recommended Posts

I am in the same boat. We just bought a 29' trailer. It will be at or over a bit of the max my Durango can tow. I would like to upgrade my truck in the near future. I would like to get a superduty with the new 6.7 diesel but at 50k not sure if that will happen. My wife likes the F150 and with a 11300 lb rating it may be an option. Not sure what to do.

Wait for that buddy to pull it up cause soon as gas soars the HD gassers will drop like rocks like they did last time.

diesel goes up as well as gas does??? and is still higher on top of that... from what ive seen unless you really WANT or NEED a diesel gas is the way to go especaily in minnesota when its -40 outside. my boss has a 07 gmc duramax every winter it gels up atleast 3 times even with mixed fuel and additive it still does that... in my book it just doesnt sound like you need a deisel the price just doesnt justify for your needs unless you really want one IMO..

Just some thoughts this thread has helped me clear up and maybe some answers to some of the questions that have been asked:

Gas vs. Diesel

I loved the snap of the Duramax and I know it will hold up the trucks value higher and longer but - the up front price is a concern and the cold weather starting is a concern. Plus I bowhunt alot and get really paranoid about smells around my truck.

If I find a 1 ton or diesel thats a steal, I won't pass it up though. wink

Which leads me to the 3/4 ton decision. I just don't need a 1 ton and a dually is out because of the winter driving concerns.

When I say I need to move the camper only a couple times per year, I just plan to tow it town for a good bath if I want. And who knows, maybe sometime we might want to take it somewhere else for some reason? I just want to have that option available at any time I decide.

I mentioned earlier in the thread this weekend would be our third attempt to have a friend haul it for us. Well, his plans changed again for work. And my back up friend is working also so he can't either. However our first friend is letting us borrow his 2008 F250 to take it up on our own since he knows we need to get it there and feels bad that he's backing out again.

I need my own HD truck.

I'm opting for the one newer truck instead of a second older one to park with the camper because I still have long road trips ahead of me so a newer lower mileage vehicle makes sense.

Also, I don't need any more vehicles to take care of and pay insurance on.

Thanks for the advice about shopping out of town also - like in different states. I would've probably just shopped in MN otherwise. It could be well worth a road trip.

The only thing about that, and I know it doesn't bother everyone, is that I always feel a little guilty about bringing my car to the local dealer for checking out potential warranty issues when I bought it somewhere else. Yeah, I know they technically have to take care of the warranty work, but I also know that a dealer doesn't always recoup every dime from warranty that they have into the job.

Based on what you say you always use the same dealer you buy your vehicle at for warranty work, thus you probably don't shop around for price on new vehicles as you may end up driving across town for warranty work if that's where the best price to buy from was? Out of state would have nothing to do with what your saying.

I don't buy new from dealerships so I will always be in this scenario as far as warranty work goes.

At least this is work you are bringing in for the techs to do! They get payed for warranty work, and don't care where you purchase the vehicle from, or at least they shouldn't.

The newer diesels start fine in the cold weather. I've started my Duramax when it was 20 below after sitting on a lake all night and I know Valv has a video of his Cummins firing up after a long cold night as well. They aren't the diesels of the 80's and 90's. Maintain the right fuel/additives when it gets super cold and you shouldn't have a problem.

Well, since there's always something to new to consider before making a decision... grin

Another element came out of left field on Friday night to affect my choice, for now anyway. My wife's company just told the staff at her office they were closing the site by the end of September. Bye, bye. frown. This after the threat of the consolidation was squelched last fall. I guess they decided to tell everyone their jobs in MN were safe but forgot to mention it was only while they rebuild the other state's site for the expansion that's about to take place. Reason cited: Minnesotax. Thanks for that one too Limit. wink

Our friend's Super Duty F250 chugged the camper north on Saturday in fine fashion for a gasser. If I were to pull that type of load a lot I would probably not think twice a about a diesel though. That 5.4L worked hard. But now its back in their yard with a topped off tank, washed up, vacuumed and Armor All shined up on the inside.

It is good to have friends that will reach out for ya.

Our camper is in it's resting spot for now and until we get a new job lined up for my wife there won't be a new/used truck purchase. I did still have to stop and look at that '05 Chev crew cab with the Duramax on the way home though. Yeah, it was sitting right in between an '05 Dodge with a Cummins and a couple 3/4 ton Fords. That was just mean. laugh

Another consideration for you:

How many Dodge diesel, and Duramax diesel you see on the lots compared to the Fords... grin

There's always some of them for sale, rarely you see Cummins or Chevy.

Maybe because Ford sold about the same as Chevy and Dodge combined wink
