Wireless-N

Recommended Posts

At this time I have a Linksys wireless-G network. Right now my fire pit and garage are on the fringe. I can move my router around and get it good to one or the other, but not both. Is the wireless-N range actually better or do they just say it is?

Also if N is used with a G device will there still be a range benefit? I know the speed will be that of the slowest device.

Thanks.

I have a Belkin N+ router, with (2) Linksys G range extenders.

I could barely get a signal in my shop, about 200' away.

Now I have the range extender at the very edge of the range, where I can get a constant signal, which extends it perfectly the next 40' where the computer usually is.

You get "G" speed at the other computer, but it's fine.

The other extender is in the living room, since where I need to have the router to get to the shop, there's too many wires and walls in the way to get a decent signal to the PS3. The router keeps the signal constant out there as well.

I tried Linksys and Netgear N routers before I went to Belkin, but they wouldn't get the signal out far enough.

I am not concerned about the speed. It's more the range. We like to listen to or internet radio by the fire pit with an I pod touch, and I like it in the garage when I am working in there. The touches would be N devices. Right now I have it working good in the garage but it's iffy buy the fire pit. If I move the router I can get it good by the fire pit and iffy in the garage. It wouldn't take much of an increase in range to make me happy.

I agree, you still may not get the range you are looking for with the N router, but you pretty much for sure will with the extender.

When I switched to N routers, it was a Belkin Pre-N that I could get to go the distance I wanted.

Then when that one quit working, I tried Linksys, D-Link and Netgear and I couldn't even get a signal to where I wanted it to go, let alone a partial signal that would fade in and out.

I finally got the Belkin N+ to get me a consistant enough signal to where I can put an extender to get the rest of the distance.

Buy the N router and keep your receipt. It's not software so you can return it if it doesn't work.

You'll just be out the time trying to set up the router each time, plus the time to run back and forth to the store.
