catching trout

A friend asked me where/how to fish for trout. I'm not a trout fisherman and I've never caught one. I told him about Cenaiko lake and Square Lake having trout that can be caught off fishing piers since they don't have a boat. Don't know any local streams that carry trout. They don't have fly rods so I suggested an ultralight set up could work. Any of you avid trout enthusiasts have any tips what to use and how to fish them I can offer them so they have a good chance at catching trout.

Are you talking lake trout or stream trout species?

Stream trout are fun, generally smallish in MN, and can be caught via everything from worms under a bobber to inline spinners, and of course on fly equipment.

I've only ever caught lake trout up in Canada, and we basically troll deep diving cranks in 35-40 FOW during late may through june.

Trout fishing can be successfully done in a simple manner. Mepps spinners in size 2 or under (various colors), smallest flaoting rapalas (I prefer natural colors over bright crazy ones), and small spoons. And of course the ol' reliable worm under a bobber.

JB, I used to go for the natural colors with my #3 floating raps but got a free firetiger and gave it a shot. It really outfishes the black/silver and blue/silver. Now this is on a lake that is slight bog stained and a clarity of five feet but I was surprised how well they worked.

Off topic but how'd your written test go? Been hitting the practice sessions? My physical test is on the 16th.

Water clarity/color would be a factor. I'm used to very clear water up north.

I scored 90 on the written test...physical test is this friday. I'm glad they gave practice tests, had some definite mistakes that hopefully have been corrected eek
