Northern Flicker in flight

Recommended Posts

I came across this Flicker going after a small anthill, as usual with these birds it didn't let me get very close before taking off. I was surprised by how red their wings look in flight.

I was also surprised at how fast their wings beat! I'm going to have to crank up the shutter speed next time I see them.

Nice images of a beautiful woodpecker. It would be rare to see the red shafted form of the northern flicker in this neck of the woods. In flight, they are quite striking.
