Food Ideas Canada Trip

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some ideas of different types of food to bring up on a trip to Canada. This is not a fly in so weight is not an issue. In the past we have had hamburgers, brats, cold cuts etc. Just looking for some different ideas or items that have worked for your trips. We will have a group of 6. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

One of the things my buddy has been doing now for our canada trips is to bring a large bone in picnic ham.

He slow cooks it in a large roasting pan all afternoon. Super easy and maintenance free. The we come in for Dinner and gorge on ham and potatos and for the next 2 days we have extra ham to pick on and make sandwiches with etc...its very easy.

We have also done the same with a large Turkey. Simply place in oven...go fish in the afternoon and come back to Dinner. Very easy - and very tasty.

We do something similar. One of our group has an LP powered infrared rotisserie. We season a turkey or roast, start it at lunch, and come back a few hours later when it is done.

We also plan on multiple meals of fish. This year our menu includes fish fry, catalina walleye, grilled walleye, fish tacos, and kalamojakka (fish soup) made with walleye.

Sorry, some of these recipes might be closely guarded secrets so I don't know if I'll be at liberty to share. grin

thanks guys for the idea's already. Do you have any ideas for B-Fast and maybe one good dinner idea. I like to have everything pre cut, or pre cooked for as little as prep work needed so I can enjoy a beer with the boys. But I am also into very good food for dinner. I pre smoke ribs so we have that one night but looking for some different idea's for dinner. Something different that you guys have had or heard about that was a big hit. I can work my way around a kitchen so any idea's is open.

Ribs are a great idea. One of our party smoked some up last year and they were delicious!

For breakfast:

I don't know how to create or obtain a starter but one of our party usually brings along his sour-dough pancake mix. These cakes are terrific! I think last year he told us the batter was going on 14 years old. Unfortunately he won't be with us this year. He's in the process of changing jobs and so he will be relocating from NM to IN. Hopefully, he'll be back next year.

For dinner...bacon wrapped shrimp make a nice appetizer. Those can be pre-made at home, then grilled up there.

The common breakfast for us is potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage, and onion fried together. Potatoes are pre-baked the night before, chunked, and fried in all that porky goodness. Onions go in last and late for a "crispier" onion. Two o/e eggs on top of the "gruel" and you typically don't need to do lunch.

Cooler weather during dinner calls for comfort food. Comfort food typically requires something with gravy!! Angel hair pasta with "spag sauce" was a big hit last year. This year we are bringing the dutch oven and doing cobblers every other night. Easy dessert!!

This is one breakfast we like. Go to Sam's Club and get a big can of their gravy and sausage sauce. We like to fry up some of our own sausage ahead of time and add to the gravy. You can put it in a crock pot over night or heat it up in the morning. Cook up some biscuts that come in the pop open container. We also like fry up some eggs to put on top of the biscuts and gravy. It is an easy and tasty breakfast.

omlets in a bag: have a large pot of water boiling. In a plastic ziplock bag add your scrambled egg mix (you can buy this pre-made in quart cartons or just beat some eggs) and anthing else you like in your omlets that is pre-cooked and pre-chopped (e.g. cheese, onion, peppers, bacon bits, tomato, etc). Seal the bag and trow it in the boiling water for 5-10 mins until eggs are cooked. Dump it on a plate and serve it up with toast. Everyone gets what they want in an omlet and it's quick, hot and easy. Just leave the water on and people can make their omlets whenever they get up, just make sure the last one turn it off. It helps to put your name on the bag to sort out who's is who's in the large pot.

Oh man you guys are missing the deal... You have to have blueberry pancakes and if you are going through Emo you have to stop in at the Cloverleaf grocery store and buy there breakfast sausage and bacon. I think it is the best I have every had. I used to bring home 12 lbs of each every summer....
