50 mariner

I just bought a 50 mariner outboard and it sounds like it runs fine but when you open it up it seems like it dosent rev high enough.It is on a 16ft alluminum boat it should make that boat jump out of the water but it moves it along like a 5hp motor. Any sugjestions. thanks

First thought is whether or not you have the correct pitch prop on it. Do you have a tachometer? If so what rpm at WOT?

Sounds like it may be running om less than all cylinders. Maybe a bad plug or wire or two?

Welcome to the forum, this is one of the best places on earth to hang out (possibly THE BEST place....)

Anyway, your motor could be several issues.

As boatfixer said, I would check propeller first, then firing, then compression.

Do you know who had motor before ? Did you check compression before purchase ?

I did switch the prop that the guy gave me so maybe Ill put the old one back on. thanks for the advise.

Sounds dumb but is the fuel line and primer bulb in good shape? If they 're bd it will idle ok then you go to get on it and it will fall on it's face .

Also check your fittings and only use factory fittings I ran into problems wiyh after market ones last year........

thanks. I poured some stuff called sea foam into my tank and it goes pretty good now. I guess it must of had a bit of a pluged carb. Thank you all for your help
