i have two brand new in the box spools of line from last year, it's trilene XL 12lb, and 8lb test for my trolling rod and my jiging rod. i'v always just bought new line every year but i'm feelin a bit poor this year, this line should still be good, right? it's been in my tackle box all winter. is the line you get off the shelf even new every year? thanks for any input. good luck on saturday.

The thing that hurts fishing line the most is heat and sun so I think that your line should be just fine.

Agree.

Plus you can tie some knots and break them and the line to see if it still has the strength it should.

You really can't tell. If the box has an inch of dust on it, chances are it is pretty old. If you are buying from a busy store the chances are pretty good that they have decent turn over.

I wouldn't sweat it though. I use only trilene xl 4 pound and 6 pound. I have drawer full and some of it has been in there for years. As stated above, as long as it is away from heat and sunlight it should be good.

I use the "tie a knot" method to check line currently on my reels. One thing I have noticed on older line (unused) is that when you are spooling it and running it through your fingers you might get some white residue on your fingers. I assume that this is some form of oxidation. I have never found it to be a problem, though.

One other thought. I am an improved cinch knot guy. I find that new/fresh line allows the knot to slip up to the hook very easily. Older line that probably needs to be replaced won't slide as easily. I think it just gets sort of brittle.
