Is a fuel flow meter worth the price and which would you recommend?

Question

Looking at possibly putting a fuel flow meter in my boat. I run about 100-150 hours a year on a 100hp Yamaha 4-stroke. I am just curious if its worth the cost and what brand or type of meter would you guys recommend. Thanks.

there is a ton of info about them online, sounds like the folks that do use them will continue to support the use. not much on the negative as they show you where you are wasting fuel etc. i guess if you consider gas price/unit price you could find out how long it will take to save money on fuel. one thing i read was the guy said he now limits the take off throttle and just goes into it a bit slower along with overall speed. sounds like a cool device, wish i could get one for my truck.

I've had one for two years and consider it essential. Those gas gauges are worthless. Mine shows a half a tank when there is very little gas left. With the flow meter, I know within a half a gallon how much fuel I have left.

yeah, my fuel gauge never works either and I was hoping that a fuel flow meter would replace that also. Have you guys heard anything about the Lowrance system in regards to the fuel flow sensor?

The Lowrance network works great for tying in a fuel flow sensor. The only real trick is getting the fuel flow sensor mounted as perfectly horizontal as possible.

If you go with the Lowrance network, you should also tie you Yamaha motor to it with an interface cable, so you can view and monitor the engine readings too.

That sounds like a good deal....would a 1999 motor still be compatible with this system?

I think a 1999 motor is going to be too old to communicate on the nmea2000 network that the Lowrance units use .... I think they need to be 2006 or newer motors to work on that communication protocol.

Yamaha Engines:

The following models can use our Command Link gauges and triducer which are NMEA certified.

Please note: Yamaha Engines did not output Engine Trim or Engine Temp onto the NMEA 2000 bus until 2006. Lowrance devices cannot configure/calibrate Yamaha devices. A Yamaha dealer will have to make those changes.
