Deck Stain

Recommended Posts

I'm not familiar with the Cabots stain. I've always used Sikkens and am happy with the results. Both their DEK or SRD products are good. The SRD is a one coat product. Sikkens is usually a bit more per gallon but in stains you usually get what you pay for.

The Cabots is good. Depending on your deck wood, you may need to recoat several times in the first couple years. I have had the best luck with SW oil based toner in natural and cedar colors. IMHO it holds up about as well as any stain available and I've tried them all. Skol.

I got a product from sherwin williams for my 200' of cedar fence. It has been on for almost 4 years and there is no fading or any degradation. I believe they make the same product for decks floors also. It wasn't all that expensive and cleaned up nicely. Just something else to look at.

I used it on my porch and deck. It's as good as you can get in my opinion. It still wears on the decking where there is high traffic but still better than water based. I put it on 2 years ago and only need to redo the decking boards. All vertical surfaces are good yet. I think I wore the stain off the deck boards this winter shoveling snow so often.

I've used Cabot products before. (not that particular one). I've been impressed with how long they hold up.

I put it one the floor boards with a roller on a broom handle. Worked really slick. Would do about 3-4 board wide 10-20 ft long. Roll it one, then go back and brush it in. Saved a lot of time.

sikkins is a great product and holds up very well. There SRD wont ever peel off, which is the major concern when doing a deck. If the deck is new wood make sure to give it plenty of drying time as new wood can hold moisture.

How long do you recommend to wait? I just finished my cedar deck, some of the wood was pretty saturated but most of it was dry as far as I could tell.

I think I'm going with sikkens as it's been recommended by a few of my co-workers already as well. Trying to get a redish/brown tint to contrast the black aluminum I used for balusters.

Not much of wait time for cedar decking if at all. If water seems to be absorbing into the wood a bit then it is time. If you would've used treated decking rather than cedar then you would be waiting alot longer for the wood to dry out, possibly next year even.
