Trailer Bunks?

Daze Off

Question

One of the carpeted wood pieces on the landing guides on my trailer fell out as I was loading the boat on Sunday. Either it had rotted enough or the lag screws used to secure it had corroded enough to lose their bite. In either case it and the lag screws need to be replaced.

My question is would pressure treated lumber be OK for this purpose or should I go for marine grade lumber? If marine grade lumber, any suggestions on where to get it - I need 2 x 6.

As for the lag screws, should I go for galvinized or something else?

Thanks for your help!

Stainless Steel, they cost a little more but you'll only need a few I'm guessing. FF has much better prices vs other big boxes.

If the pressure treated lumber you used is in direct contact with metal from your trailer, it will corrode it very fast. In as little as six months, there will be no support left. Today's pressure treated lumber is the most corrosive lumber we have seen.

No contact directly with the metal - side guide-on bunks are encased in plastic and the carpeted board fits into it on the back and side and sticks out about 3/4 inch. Screws secure the board into the plastic casing through the back.

Thanks everyone!

Use extruded plastic lumber with poly strips(countersunk,so the screws won't scratch)on the edges that come into contact with your boat hull.Stainless hardware throughout the boat and trailer or possibly aluminum screws depending on the strength factor needed.c63
