FOR ANYONE READING THIS POST, GO AND WRITE DOWN AN INVENTORY OF YOUR GUNS RIGHT NOW AND STORE THAT AWAY FROM WHERE THE GUNS ARE KEPT. List make, model, caliber, serial number, accessories, general condition, and if you can take a picture do so. If you have an extensive collection, or some you aren't sure about, an apprasial is a good idea. Most people don't carry enough insurance, check with your agent and see what the options are, my basic homeowners was good for $1000 on firearms, upping it was only a couple dollars a year. If you don't have a safe, look into even a cheap one. Please find a way to secure your firearms, it's not just a good idea, its the law.

So inside a locked house isn't considered secure under the law?

Question the insurance agent on any policy rider that you put on. I had one years ago, and when I had a C grade 870 trap gun stolen, they determined that it had depreciated since I bought it instead of appreciating and gave me only$100 for it. I asked where I could buy a replacement for that much and was told it wasn't their problem. So I asked what my 1876 Winchester was worth and they said that also was depreciating. They lost my business very soon after that.

I have all mine scheduled with an inland marine rider for a specific amount. It's only a couple extra bucks a year. My guns are nothing fancy or expensive but I think it's worth it not to have to fight deductible or argue values.

Think of how many home robberies you have heard of, and what do they always take: cash and guns. Never fails.

One reason why it's not worth going cheap on a gun safe. I learned that a few years ago when I lost my keys to my safe and need a gun. Took me 30mins to get in it with a screwdriver and a cordless drill. Simply spent a grand on a great safe and I'm not sure the good lord could get into it.
