Rotor / Pad choice

Recommended Posts

So about a year and a half ago I bought an 05 Envoy with junk brakes (knowingly). Right away I brought it in to my regular mechanic to have them fixed. He had the rotors turned and put new pads on. About 3 months later they were pulsating pretty good upon braking. I decided to just fix it myself and change the rotors (but not the pads because they seemed good. Might have been a bad idea). I used the cheapo rotors from a local store (about $30 per rotor).

Now 1 year later (but 40K miles), I'm starting to get a slight pulsation again.

So my questions are:

Is it normal for rotors to go bad in 40K miles? Is it because they are cheapos?

Should I buy "expensive" rotors and pads next time around? Any particular type?

Yes to all of your questions. Yes it is pretty normal for brakes to wear and pulsate after 40k, especially if you drive in stop and go traffic alot. Yes, usually the cheapo rotors warp much easier then the more expensive ones.

If you are doing any towing or really working your brakes when driving, it might not be a bad idea to go with slotted rotors and a good set of ceramics. I'm not familiar with the Envoy braking system, but dealing with brakes every 40k miles sounds like a huge PITA. I run Hawks HD ceramics on my Landcruiser. The vehicle weighs 5500lbs and most of the summer I'm pulling a boat. No issues with rotors warping so far. So... yes to all your ?s and time for an upgrade. Skol.

Not unusual for an Envoy or Trail Blazer. My 02 - turned rotors to nearly the minimum and started to notice some pulsing before 30K. New cheap rotors are thinner with less cooling capability. Next time mine gets new rotors - NAPA makes a big deal about theirs being much better quality - thicker with better cooling design. The ceramic pads are worth the higher cost too.

Get the good ones. Ive got 95,000 miles on my brakes on my 00 Silverado. They look like the have 50,000 left on the pads but Im starting to get a very slight pulsation now. I do a fair amount of towing too!
