Crabgrass Preventer/Starter Fertilizer & New Grass Seed

Was watching "Ask this old House" this week and Roger Cook helped a guy repair a lawn that was severely damaged from snow mold. They prepped the ground and then put down new grass seed and starter fertilizer/crabgrass preventer. The lawn looked great when they came back in a few months.

I always have been told not to put seed down with crabgrass preventer or it would deter the grass seed. Am I way off base here?

Did you catch what kind of crabgrass preventer they applied? There are some products like Tupersan for example which you can apply at seeding time however they are spendy.

Correct. There are special crabgrass preventers which will allow you to seed at the same time.

1. They are very spendy as hotrod said.

2. Fall is the best time to seed / overseed.

Thanks for the clarification guys. They weren't specific on what kind/brand it was. Just peeked my curiosity.

I always do my overseeding in the fall, but do have to repair damage from the dog in the spring. Doesn't look like the dog did much damage this year, so I will be putting down the crabgrass preventer.

Wait until the temps get high enough to make things work. Putting it down now is a waste of money and chemical. I think you need a soil temp consistently at least 60 degrees before you should even think of it. Read what lawnman says and follow his advice cause the guy knows what he's talking about.
