Humminbird Interlink Question

whitebassman

Question

Here's my planned setup:

Console graph: Humminbird 998c side imaging

Bow Graph: Humminbird 778c (5 inch screen).

I am trying to figure out if the bow graph needs to be gps to read the waypoints marked via the console graph. I've read somewhere that even the 778c which is GPS capable with an addon, can read the waypoints. That it uses the gps off the 998. The dealer said they usually mount the bow transducer on the transom. I asked if they could mount the bow on the trolling motor, which they didn't seem to think was a good idea.

So if I want to read the waypoints on the bow graph via interlink, does the bow graph need to be GPS or not? Thanks.

I talked with Humminbird and they stated no issue with mounting the bow transducer on the trolling motor.

As far as the waypoints, I have a GPS in both locations so I don't know.

I would assusme you will need to connect the 2 through the gps. Does the 778c have a plug in for the gps interlink cable to plug into it?

It looks like the 788c can use the gps receiver and waypoints if you have it connected with interlink. I don't know if you can save waypoints on the 788 (since it's not a gps), but it can pull and display the gps position and waypoints from the other unit (combo unit).

Regarding mounting the transducer for the bow unit, it's almost always done on the trolling motor, and it's almost never done on the transom. If you put it on the transom it's going to interfer almost immediately with your console graph's transducer (unless you run one of them on a different frequency) --- plus if you're fishing in the front of the boat, don't you want to see what's under the front of the boat, not the back of the boat.

If your trolling motor has Universal Sonar (US2) you can simply connect to it via a simple cable --- if it does not have US2 there is a simple bracket that will mount the transducer to the trolling motor.

Trolling motor will be a MK Terrova 80#, the dealer didn't seem so sure about the new Humminbird's, as they were more familiar with Lowrance, but they did promise to call me when the boat arrives and see how I want it set up. Then I will see if they can connect the bow graph to the trolling motor. I believe it is just a cable hookup from graph to trolling motor?

If the Terrova you got has US2 then a simple cable will connect it and that would be the way to go. Even if your Terrova doesn't have US2 I would still put the transducer on the bowmount. I agree with vikingmeatwad, I don't have a great feeling about your dealer and his rigging.
