Cleaning Vex FL-8

walleyemaniac

Question

I've seen other posts talking about this, but I just have a couple of questions.

1.What should I use to polish the armiture(I think thats what the brushes run on)?

2. How thick are the brushes when new? It looks like there's still quite a bit left.

Then finally when I took the disk off that little pastic piece under the nut came off and I don't know which way the flat side should face. Or doesn't it matter?

Use a small stiff brush and some high percentage alcohol and you should be good,

As for the brushes just check them to make sure they are all the same length and making good contact on the arm. If you see daylight between the brushes and the arm I would get a new set of brushes.

I believe the Flat Side faces the assembly.

If you concerned, drop Vexilar Costumer Service a call..a technician will be happy to help.

Problems with Dim Lights

------------------------

Most likely, your light intensity problem is from the accumulation of brush dust on the inside of the unit. You should be able to clean this yourself.

Remove the two screws from the back cover, unplug the power and transducer jacks from the PC board, and remove the back cover. Next, remove the control knobs from the front of the case by loosening the Allen set screw on each knob (Allen size is 1.5 MM). Remove the four screws that hold the PC board in place and remove the board.

Using compressed air, blow out all of the brush dust from in and around the wheel assembly and wash the front case, inside and out, with soap and water.

To clean the brush contacts (slip rings), make a tool by taping a small piece of fine sandpaper (400 grit) to the end of a thin popsicle type stick. Connect the rear case power jack to the PC board. Be careful not to touch the motor with the wiring or the motor will short out and be damaged. Turn the unit on. Be careful of the spinning wheel! Insert the tool you made between the board and the spinning wheel. Be careful not to touch/bend the brush springs with the tool. Just clean the three brass rings until they are shinny. Run the unit for at least 30 minutes at room temperature to reseat the brushes. This should increase your light intensity to where it was when the unit was new.
