Question

Sometimes when ice fishing I have trouble picking up my lure on the flasher, I try adjusting the gain with no results, but then other times I have no problem picking them up. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm not sure then. If you have a wide beam transducer (most common) it's sometimes hard to see your jig in deep water, and I think a narrow beam might make it a little tougher in shallow water, but I would think ~20 ft of water would be ok for either option.

It has to do with the profile of the jigs you use. I have some that are hard to pick up at any gain level and then I have some that get picked up right away at a low gain setting. experiment with different jigs and see if the profile makes a difference.

The other thing that can cause you a problem is the cone angle when you are fishing close to the bottom on a sharp drop you can lose your jig in the drop. If you are on a flat sand bottom you might have to turn up the gain on certain jigs because of the profile but for the most part that should be the best for viewing using the least amount of power and if you still have problems then you might have a bad transducer.
