Best new 10" Auger

I just bought a Jiffy 3hp with a 10" blade on it last week, I took it up the lake this past weekend and it cuts ice like a hot knife through butter. It has tons of power and is twice as fast as my old jiffy.

+1 for the Jiffy. I bought last years model STX this year and am very happy with it. Starts on the first pull and cuts great. Also cant beat the 3 year warranty on the blades. Im not a big fan of all the plastic on the new augers as I think it might be easy to crack something if it gets too cold but from what I have seen most new auger companies are going that route anyways so your kinda stuck with it.

I agree, you can't do much about it. Which is why I am sticking with the old school Jiffy Model30. This auger is about 20years old had to put a new carb on it 4years ago came assembled and all just put the bolts in. I just can't see getting rid of an auger that drills faster than any I've seen out there.

if it was me I would turn the mag 3 into a 10" and buy a new solo powered 8". I know of a place you can get a 10" chipper drill unit for $80. I turned my 1991 Mag 3 into a 10" and it cuts like a dream. I will be looking to get a new lazer mag in 6" next season. I still have my 8" chipper if I want a 8" hole I just switch it out with the 10".

I have both a Nils and Mora bit in 8" so I don't need another one. What 10" bit are you talking about? I didn't think the Mag 3 with only 1.5(??) HP would have enough power to turn any large bit very well, but I am interested to know more.

If you go onto Jiffys HSOforum right now they have last years model Legend XT 3 horse on sale right now for $330 and doesnt have all the plastic on it and still has the Tecumseh engine on it. Thats where I got my STX this year as a demo, they where used by the prostaff last year and then put through inspection and got new blades on them. Couldnt tell mine was even used and definitely cant beat the price for a basically new auger. Doesnt have the warrantys like the STX but still looks like a good auger.

If you spend a lot of time in a perm shack go Legend XT 3 hp.

If you like to "run and gun" or portable a lot go SM 2.5 hp Lazer or 3 hp Pro Lazer.

All good choices in 10" size.

The Mag 3 is a 2HP tehcumseh and mine has no issues turning a 10" chipper drill unit. on another post earlier in the year there was a discussion on older strikemaster that where a 25 to 1 gear ratio and not the 40 to 1 of today. mine being orginally a 8" Mag 3 had the 25 to 1 ratio.

deadsea,

go in the equipment forum and look for the post that is titled "auger trouble" the part where the different ratios are in the middle of the thread. Berfish was the one that talked about the difference and tells how to find out which one you have. hope this helps. if you do have a 40 to 1 strikemaster may be able to switch it to 25 to 1 if they have parts avalible and you want to spend the money on that old of auger.

I bumped the thread to the top for you.

look at your motor and get the numbers off the side of it. it will be above the spark plug and should start with tc300. this is how you can tell when your augers motor was made down to the exact date of manufacture. email me this number to [email protected] and I can tell you when it was made.

here is the info.

would assume that there are some other Strikemaster 8" augers that have the 40:1 gears in them out there. If you think your auger is slower than it is supposed to be crack your gear box apart and if you have two 4" gears that look like they have about the same amount of teeth on each one....then you have the 25:1(faster). If the top gear has noticably more teeth (96 teeth\about twice as many) than the bottom one then you have the 40:1 (slower).

Thanks Brad B,

I don't have the auger handy but it cranks right along with an 8" bit so I would assume it has the 25:1. No complaints.

I don't think that the old single blade 10" bit is the best out there, so I may follow one of the poster's advice to get a new 10" double blade bit vs a second auger.

I'll grab that number when I get home and email you. It would be good to know either way.

Steve

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
