Spare tire carriage 04 Silverado

Recommended Posts

Previous owners cut the piece that the spare tire attaches to under the box, must have rusted and needed to do that to get to the spare. I've been carrying the spare in the bed of the truck , but now that summer is closer I would like to store the tire in it's rightful place. How much to they cost and how tough of a job is it to replace, thanks.

dont know if they changed 11 years, but my 93's cable rusted that held the spare tire (if yours is the type you slide the long pole through a hole next to the license plate and crank it down) so I bougth a Reese spare tire holder for trailers, i hooked that around the bar (theres a gap inbetween the bed and the bar) jacked up the tire and was able to bolt it on; works perfect

I had my spare tire on my blazer mysteriously go missing and had to re-do that too.

IF the mechanism still works and the wire is good you could get a new end piece for the cable (the part that holds the tire up-not sure of the name) from a junkyard. Most hardware stores sell the crimp type wire clamps (and rent the clamping tool) that will allow you to re-attach the end piece securely. DO NOT use the little u-bolt clamps as they tend to slip and let your tire fall off.

Otherwise if its rusty and ugly looking get one from the dealer like Airjer said. They are not to bad to replace. Spray it down good with penetrating oil a couple times in the days prior to you replacing it to help loosen it up.

haha that was my situation; after the original cable broke; i bought some wire and teh U-Bolt, worked for about a year, then while driving around in SD for antelope (i hope thats where i lost it, otherwise it could have been the interestate!) i noticed i didnt have a spare anymore, so i didnt do the jimmy rig cable/ubolt again!
