MN Greenheads
I took the survey here are my comments: We need an early teal season or teal and wood duck season people can tell the difference between teal and mallards.Manage the water we duck hunt on more intensively with flooded food plots drawdowns and limiting pressure hrs. of hunting
Rhino32
Avid, accomplished duck hunters can tell the difference between teal and mallards, but for the average weekend warrior, I highly doubt it. The problem is most hunters that would head out for early teal season, haven't seen a flying duck up close in 10 months...everything would look like a teal, and especially in MN a ton of young woodies would be victims. Don't get me wrong, I am an advocate for early teal season, I just don't think it would be the best option for the resource.Perhaps a waterfowl education course could be put into place for all duck hunters. They would have to pass a test on effective shotgun range and duck identification.
MN Greenheads
I think the teal season is the best option for the resource. You can harvest birds that move through way before the season starts, you don't interfere with your opener as it would be 3 weeks later and you add that many more hunting opportunities to the year.People can and are expected to tell the difference between birds in the regular season such as: 1 hen mallarad compared to 4 drake mallards, pintails at 1, wooducks @ 2 and the divers that are all split up in total numbers. If you shoot a pintail you better be able to tell the difference on your next bird. The same is true with hen mallards. People can and will tell the difference. Rhino32
MN Greenheads,I agree with what you are saying. When I said it wasn't the best option for the resource, I was refering to all of the ducks, other than the teal, that would be shot. I suppose if the early season works in other states it would work here as well. Hunters just need to use good judgement, and if they are in doubt, they shouldn't shoot. Unfortunately there are many that lack common sense and good judgement, which in turn ruins it for the rest of us.I hunted a public metro area for early geese last fall. I was amazed at what I saw. Guys goose calling to Cormys and then unloading on em. Shooting at geese 100+ yds.....in the parking lot. Crazy. I expect that to a certain degree on public land, but that was ridiculous. On a side note: Does anybody know if there has been anymore discussion on an early goose season starting in August?

I haven't seen anything for a while but I doubt it will happen. So I assume we are looking at a September 4th opener date for Early Goose. MN Greenheads
r.ihno, I know what your saying but at the same time those guys are out on opener and the dnr could use them as a revenue source. Most all hunters know the difference and obey the law. It is way better than in the 70's when a lot a guys out there were drinking.

Fish'n guy
well in all honestly something aside from the fall early goose needs to be done to control the resident goose population in Minnesota and south dakota.
dan z
I took the survey and liked that there were some questions about or waterfowl season. I would like to have a teal season for the second weekend of early goose. I believe that it would give a few birds a chance to leave and the ones that would stay around could be shot at. I also believe that the teal in minnesota leave because of weather not pressure. I look at the swan lake surveys and most of the teal last year left the slough before the season even openned and you cant hunt early season geese on the water. I dont like the split season, because last season the first couple weeks had alberta clippers pushing ducks through and that could happen when the season is closed in the southern half of the state. I would rather see bag limits go down to protect all species and have a longer season. IE oct 4 to dec 10.
RumRiverRat
Perhaps a waterfowl education course could be put into place for all duck hunters. They would have to pass a test on effective shotgun range and duck identification. That is a great idea, it would eliminate 85% of hunters, more ducks for me!!!!
