Smallmouth Season NE of hwy 53?

Why is the smallmouth opener NE of hwy 53 usually the same weekend as walleye season? I'm assuming it is the 15th of may this year (couldn't find a date on dnr HSOforum)... no matter what I'm looking forward to battling a bronzeback again thats for sure!

The simple answer to why the bass season opens early up north is because it is a tradition. There is no biological reason.

Yes. In fact, fishing opener is a great chance to catch some absolute hogs up there cus everyone floods the river mouths for walleyes...

i think it opens earlier up there because there just isnt that much pressure on them. lot more lakes, lot more fish, lot less people

and most people fish for walleyes anyways

Absulutly man. There is some monster smallies in that lake. Opening weekend I usually go after the slap crappies, and smallies as both those species are super easy to catch that time of year. I will wait tell monday to seriously fish the walleye up there.
