Flambeau River

Thinking of planning a musky trip in the area of Bruce. Can anyone tell me how deep the water is on the river and if it is boat able down to the big water(the name is slipping my brain)? Thanks Joe

I can't help you out at all, I've canoed the upper stretches from Fifield downstream but a lot of that is shallow and we didn't fish it. Maybe Cooter will stop by, I think he's fished there before.

Hi monarch - you'll want a canoe or small john boat for the flambeau. Unless the water is high you'll be bumpin and bangin rocks and also doing a little walking from time to time. I've never gone all the way past where it meets the Chippewa and down to Holcombe flowage but my guess is if you can get that far you can get to the lake. Also note that there are a couple dams between Ladysmith and Thornapple, from there its just shallow areas to worry about. Anything else just fire away!

I did a musky float last spring (either opening weekend or the weekend after) with my dad and we didn't have much luck. It could have been simply inexperience and not having musky fished out of a canoe before, but I think there was something to be said about the water temps. The water was still very cold in the river and we struggled to find active fish. Had some nice follows, but most were very lazy. Threw a lot of bucktails and small swimbaits. We did several different floats around the oxbow area.

Just my two cents from making the trip last year.
