Mr. Heater Sunflower Heater Valve Doesn't Adjust or Shutoff

JacobMHD

Question

My Mr. Heater starts fine. The thermal couple is still good. The problem is it runs wide open on every setting including OFF. I took it apart and blew out all the components with air, but it still does this. This heater is not new but has beeen taken care of. Any suggestions?

They used to have components at fleet farm or maybe a hardware store where they sell the heater or grill store not sure now any more. I know manards doesn't have them. Some bait shops or try hitting on it with a hammer gently I think they might be spring activated and it may be stuck.

i took the whole unit apart and blew it out with compressed air, no dice. What concerns me the most is that the flame/heat does not even flinch when adjusting the valve. The off setting is as high as the highest setting.

Look at he button you push when first lighting. It may be stuck in. A way to check it is to rotate the regulator to high. No gas should be coming out until you push this button. Then gas comes out and you can light the flame. After the thermocouple warms up the button is supposed to return to the out position and the flame is then regulated by the regulator knob.

Mine gets stuck on occasion.

Lets start simple...Very often there is a tiny plastic tab on the back of the control knob that snaps off, and they slip on the screw.

Did you check to see if the screw in the center of the adjustment knob is not turning along with the control knob?

As the knob can strip or crack and slip on the screw making you think your actually adjusting it, when in fact it is still in one position or the other.

If this is the case I have added a tiny flat washer to the back and front of the control knob, and got a years use out of it before the knob cracked beyond repair and forced me to replace the regulator.

A new regulator will run you about $14 to $17, if it is shot.

I ended taking the entire thing apart and I mean everything. Once I had the rubber baffle removed I found a small shard of aluminum wedged in one of the holes coming out of the aluminum housing. Gave it a tap on the table and put it all back together. Hooked it up the tank outside with the valve barely open just in case I hada problem, and to my suprise it works like new.
