Hi,

I was on the lake today and had someone drill me a couple holes (as I have a manual auger). After drilling, he took out a device the size of a smartphone that basically displayed topography of the location and the depth of the location. I asked him how much did that cost and he said about $250 plus $100 for the lake maps that included all lakes in the state. Is this some type of portable sonar depth finder?

Thank you.

I was on Gray's Bay during the day. It's now reaching 22 inches and closer to 24 inches of very thick ice. I was grateful for his help, which is a serious understatement grin

What he had was a hand held GPS unit, very handy... no pun intended. It uses satellites to find your position and the map chip lets him see the layout of the lake. Where were you?

And did you catch anything? My bad just working the room for new spots, good luck out there. I used to fish Grays Bay for years and always went north........ if you know what I am saying...... North from the access...... kinda in that direction...... over there by the...... let me just say we drove a VW Beetle out there late into March and early April because we knew the VW's floated....and the fish commited suicide....

Likely a Garmin NUVI, with a LakeMaster or MNTRAX chip in it.

He definitely had a handheld gps with the lakemaster chip. I bought the lowrance xg6 last year and what a time saver. no more drilling holes and dropping the vex down to see the depth. just walk out to the structure you want and set up. i recommend getting when if you have the means. The lakemaster chip sells for 100 plus you need a gps that has an sd slot for the chip. The lowrance Xg6 [msrp 250] had been great on the lakes and the roads but i beleive they stopped making it. You could probably find someone o selling one for less. If you fish alot its worth the money. great in the summer and even better in the winter. The chips dont have every lake mapped but any lake that is worth fishing is typically on there. Depending on the lake it is either in 5', 3' or 1 foot scale. on the newest chip some lakes are 6 inch increments.
