Strikemaster Lazer Pro vs. Lazer Mag

Greetings from Nebraska! New to the forum here and what an awesome site by the way. Had a quick question. Been going back and forth between the Strikemaster Lazer Pro and the Lazer Mag. Just wondering how much difference the 1/2 hp makes in the Pro? Found a Lazer Mag on sale for 379.00. Just wondering if the Pro is worth the extra money? They both have the awesome new Solo motors and the weight looks pretty close also. Here in NE we usually don't have over 20 inches of ice most winters. Looking at the 8 inch models in both. Thanks for all the replies.

I was told by a couple of different folks that the 2.5hp would likely start a little easier and possibly have a little longer engine life. The 3hp is going to give you a half dozen more turns faster per hole and have a bit extra torque. Either will be awesome.

Thanks for the reply fishwater. Sounds like the Lazer Mag 2 1/2 hp would be a great buy. It will sure beat popping holes with my old lazer hand auger. One other thing I forgot to ask, are you guys running the Strikemaster 2 stroke oil or is there something better out there? Thanks again for the response.

Do a search of amsoil sabre pro on this site and you will find a lot of people use it. It runs cleaner with little smoke and the auger will run better.

After you break it in you can switch to sabre pro at 80:1 or 100:1. Most seem to like to use 80:1 just to be safe. I use 100:1 and have had not problems and it works great. You can break it in with it if you like at 50:1 or so.

Since it is new you have to consider that they may not warranty it if there is any problem. They'd rather you buy their oil. I have not heard of anyone having engine trouble from using sabre though.

Yeah, I would say in your area the Lazer Mag would be more than enough to tear it up! On the oil end of things some people break it in with the strikemaster oil and go to Amsoil synthetic (saber). I personally have always used strikemaster oil but, some swear by synthetic at around 80:1 after break in period...

First off welcome to the site. Get some amsoil sabre pro! Dont put any of that sm oil in there. It gunks up everything and leaves muck coming out the exhaust. Carbons it all up. I just switched to it and what a difference in starting and performnce you hit the throttle and it is drillin now! I run 80:1 the oil is good for 100:1 but for a new one you have to break in at 50:1 i think. good luck and you wont regret it!

I was just about to post pretty much this same question about which of these two augers to choose. Any more opinons? I will be getting an 8" in one of these models. Is the 3HP all that much faster than the 2.5HP with a 8" bit in thick ice? How about compared to the 2009 models?

I have a 2hp 8" 224, pretty sure my solo 2.5hp is faster than that using a 10" bit. The 2.5 burns using the 4-blade. The Pro is about 20 turns per minute faster, probably takes about 10 seconds to go through 24", so maybe a half dozen turns ahead at best? It's gonna be noticeably faster going from the solo 2.5 to the 3hp, but not anywhere near the difference of going from the old Tecumseh to either solo model.
