Spent the past 2 days trying a few different setups to see how my 400 compares to my 100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter. Both days were sunny and very cold so the conditions would be the same and to tell you the truth I was happy with both of them. If I wanted to get very close with the 400 I was able to throw on my 25mm tube and was able to get just a close as the 100-400. I shot mostly off of my tripod so the IS did not really factor in the shots.
