thinking of yote hunting...

Recommended Posts

Most in our area is done during the day with hound dogs. Find the yote tracks and let the dogs on them. If you are going to be calling them I would recommend going with someone who knows what they are doing. Otherwise you will just be wasting time. Coyotes are smarter than most people think, and most are very educated on hunters calling. That being said, the only way to learn is by doing, well and reading, but the most effective way is to learn by doing. I would get some rabbit distress calls and try those. You can also try howlers to locate. But then you also have to think about decoys, wind direction and shooting range.

Davis, i would stay far away from Carlos, even though its the off season, there are a few predator hunters and just like any other season, that place gets beat like a dead horse. we have called them in all times of the day, and only hunt during the day. make sure you have some white covers

i would use a open reed call, and just type in you tube to listen how they should sound; make sure to play the wind right; if you would like to get an idea to start --the night before after a few hours of dark, drive around some back roads where you think there may be a yote around and try howling at some road intersections and if they light up around you, you'll have a great area to start in the morning.

Nothing like making a coyote call shy by calling from the truck. IMO, this is bad advice. Especially with other coyote hunters in the area who do their homework before going afield. Once a coyote associates a call with a vehicle, you not only ruin it for yourself, but you ruin it for other hunters.

this was a tip I learned to try from an excellent predator hunter/coworker of mine, darrell also explains it in the tutorial; "by driving up to a location, shut the vehicle off for a 5 minutes and try howling, you can use a siren (?) but a mouth call is less obnoxious; this will give you the survey of the land" although i can see your point, but if done correctly it can be very effective (not parking with lights on, driving up and calling imediatley, loud exhaust, etc.) If i were to do it i would park the truck down the road, walk up away from the vehicle and get a survey

LEP7MM is very right about this. Think about it... when you howl you are attempting to fool a coyote into thinking there's another coyote in his territory. That's why he does one of three things...

1. he may remain silent and just stay where he is or he may slink away in order to avoid a fight.

2. He may howls back in an attempt to warn you off of his territory.

3. He may approach in an attempt to kick the intruders butt. Howling is a very effective way to call coyotes but if one runs the countryside howling from vehicles, coyotes will become shy of howling and will learn not to respond either vocally or by coming in to investigate.

I would suggest learning to scout based on terrain and tracks. Do your scouting during the day time with a spotting scope and save the howling for when you want to kill the coyote.

Good luck.
