liberalized fishing/gill net info

Thinking about trying to get out and run a gill net on a local lake that is opened up for lib fishing. Never done it before and need to talk to someone who has about some of the specifics

i have fished a couple of lakes that were open to lib fishing,but i used lines,spear,and dip nets.i would imagine the rules are the same.

What do you want to know about? Using a gillnet or if it's allowed on the lake you are thinking of using it on.

how do you run a gill net ????

I think to run a gill net under the ice you would cut a hole with like you would for spearing and sink the net down with weights to hold it on the bottom and floats to keep the top of the net a few feet under the ice. Spread it out by pushing it with a stick and check it in a day. Any fish that swim into the net will get their gills stuck in the mesh and won't be able to escape.

In Manitoba commercial fishers use gill nets in the winter. They use a "jigger" to push the net along the bottom of the ice for 100yds. You can set them with differnt size mesh and at different depths to catch your target species.
