Buying Ice Fishing House

If you take it anywhere on the road in Minnesota it has to be licensed as a trailer by the DVS. If you leave it on the ice unattended between midnight and one hour before sunrise you will also have to have it licensed as a fish house. My house is covered by my home owners policy.

I believe you have to have a separate insurance policy if you want it insured off your propery. Home-owners only covers it if it is at your home.

Not according to my insurance agent. Now, not every insurance may be that way so you should check with your agent.

If your concerned with insurance covering your trailer I'd check with your agent and refer to your policy. Not all policies are the same but common clauses in homeowner's policies include trailers being listed under the special limits section (like jewelry) where a loss may be covered but only for a certain limit like $1,000. Theft of trailers away from the residence generally are not covered. You may want to look at insuring it as a travel trailer off of your auto or even a stand alone policy. I believe you may find the coverage to be broader if you put it thru the ice.

Ours is covered under a seperate policy...while towing it, my car insurance covers the house....while on the lake, if it is stolen or falls through the ice, the seperate policy covers it. Items stolen from inside the house are not covered however.

I have a separate RV policy for my wheelhouse. My homeowners covers mine while at home, it is covered by my auto policy while being towed, and if it comes off of my hitch and goes end over end through the ditch it is covered by the RV policy. It is also covered by the RV policy while on the ice. My agent checked with his office in Minnesota because I was the first person to ever try to insure a wheel house through him. He was told that a homeowners does not cover it if it comes loose from the hitch or is on the ice. Maybe different companies cover differently. This stuff is kind of confusing. confused
