Tips for spearing on rivers

Hey there. Ive gotten out a few times this year, and have had pretty good success, and it is totally enjoyable!. But ive only been out on lakes, and there is a couple rivers near by me that I know have some nice pike in, and would like to try out. What kind of things do you look for when spearing a river? What kind of structure do you look for? Slow water or moving water? Bends or straights? Deep or shallow? Thanks for any advice, as I have learned a ton from you guys here on this forum.

I spear almost only on the Mississippi and I always get them in very slow water, large bays or inlets are my favorite and i never spear in more than 8 feet of water, usually closer to 5.

Shallow backwaters, that's where guys catchin monster pike go down by me.

i would agree. Make sure you check for current, and cut your hole so that the current is going away from you. This way your decoy will be in front of you, not under your feet all the time!
