chest freezer

Question

Can a older model(silver ones) chest freezer be in a non-heated garage without being plugged in? I don't have anything to put in it now, but I don't want the cold temps to ruin the freon/motor. Along the same lines, when I do put stuff in the freezer will plugging it in during cold temps be bad for the freon/motor?

bucketmouth64, I have had a freezer in my unheated garage with assorted beef 1/2's and butchered hogs for the last 14 years with no adverse effects (other than I need to keep replenishing the meat, cuz someone eats it.) It will not hurt the freon or compressor to be cold, that's what it's supposed to be. If it's cold outside, the freezer doesn't 'need' to run, once it warms outside, the oil(freon) will also warm and take over the cooling duties. However, don't be alarmed if you walk into the garage and the freezer is running. Phred52
