Stickjiggler
I have a 13 yr old kitchenaid frig. and I think the compressor is going out. I smells hot and runs for hours at a time. When it quits it makes a big clunk when it shuts off.Is it worth repairing or should I buy a new more efficient one?Any idea how much it would cost to repair? pinkfloyd4ever
Ya, I think time to buy new. Hard to swallow the cost, but you will make it up over time
DrKen
couple of things you might want to check. First make sure the coils are clean in the back/bottom of the fridge and secondly there may be a fan in the freezer that circulates air to the fridge, these often go out and this causes the compressor to run forever. Lastly check the thermostat and make sure it works. There are some good websites that sell parts and have the info to walk you thru the diagnosis of the problem. Just google it for parts. more than likely it is a simple inexpensive fix.
Stickjiggler
DrKen I took off the panel in back and vacuumed off the comp.and everything I could. I also took off the front grill and vacuumed in front. The fan in the freezer is working but I feel very little air going into the frig. There is no Ice build up in the freezer either limiting air flow to frig. I've been there before and know what to look for to solve that.
jeffreyd
what if you unplug and let sit to do a complete dry out, if nothing else, if you buy it before the first of the year you can get a tax credit for energy star. good luck always seems like something major breaks at the holiday time.
