How do you guys set your gain? Also do you need to change the gain when you switch from 9 degree to 19 degree cones? The reason I ask is when I was switching between from my 9 to 19 I had to turn up the gain to pick up my jig. Thanks!

Yes you'll need to adjust your gain as you change ducer angles.

Like said in general you'll want to just pick up your jig.

Of coarse different size and profile jigs show up differently.

That you have to take into account. To make that point lets switch the word "jigs" to "aircraft".

You have a 747 and a Stealth bomber. Echo location is time measured from a signal sent to its return signal. You have a larger amount of return signal coming back from the large reflective surface from the 747 as opposed to the stealth bomber that has a small reflective surface and one that sends signal in many different directions. They just don't make it back to the receiver.

Back to adjusting the gain. Weeds are something else to take into consideration when adjusting gain. Bait fish is another, while it is nice to mark that bait fish you don't want them showing up as hot. If you have to compromise how your lure is marked then you do that but more times then not the lure will show up on a lift or drop as the lure changes its profile in the water giving a larger area to reflect the signal back.

I use an LX5, FL18, and new to the Ice 55. The principle is all the same but they all get some getting used to.

Thanks Guys! Thats what I thought but just need to confirm it. I have another question I was fishing the other night and set my gain so the jig just turned green and then the bottom was also green then yellow. Does this mean that the bottom was soft correct????
