Guided Canadian Shield lake trout -- in the U.S.!

Recommended Posts

Hey all:

I'm entering my third winter season of guiding for lake trout on gorgeous Burntside Lake, a few miles outside Ely, Minnesota, and on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Burntside is a large, deep, clear, cold Canadian Shield lake trout lake, and average fish run from 2-10 pounds, with any given day often yielding fish in the teens, and 20+ pounders always a possibility.

Whether you have never fished for the strongest, fastest and most aggressive fish to be caught through inland ice, or whether you are a veteran laker taker who wants to learn more tactics and locations, I have much to offer.

Rates are $200/day for one client, $250/day for two people and $300/day for three or four, with a limit of four clients. I can provide full on-ice transportation and gear for one client via a two-up snowmobile. And often, depending on conditions, we can drive 4x4 pickups or SUVs wherever we want to go.

I also offer discounts for weekday and multiple-day bookings.

For more information or to inquire about bookings, shoot me an e-mail or call. As always, my contact info is listed in my sig.

And good fishing, everyone! gringringrin

Foss, if I come up for a day trip, you aren't going to haul me around in that 2-up with the leaky gas tank you just bought are you? grin

Whoops, just established a special comedian individual rate for leech -- $300/day! gringringrin

Kidding, buddy. The leak will be fixed and fully sealed by laker opener. smilesmile

So, I suppose you charge extra for Photos of the fish your customers catch also? wink Hey, what do you think about a new introductory low price for New Customers of $150 for the day? smile

Jim didn't even have to pay a dime for those photographs. As stated in the original post, there are weekday discounts available. smilesmile

The few times I've been able to fish Burntside are a few of the most remembered trips of mine.

The scenery is gorgeous and it's so peaceful.

Steve knows the lake well and is the type of guy that will go out of his way to make sure your time spent on the ice is enjoyable.

Not only that, but fishing for those Lakers is a hoot!

Plus you might get a few (not too shabby photos) if you toss him the camera wink

Let me say first hand that Steve is a fantabulous Burntside Lake Trout Guide! We made some great memories in one day that I will never forget, and to watch the eyes of a 15 year old who had never even seen a Laker before when he reeled in his first were priceless. He set the hook like he had a 60 inch Muskie on, it was priceless. Steve is 100% recomended in my book!!!! You will not forget the beauty of that Lake! Add in the great fishing partner and you have a memory of a lifetime.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
