coyote/fox calling basics

Recommended Posts

1) I start on the light side the first couple series. Each being approximately 15-20 seconds long with a 4-5 break in between each series. If still no sign, I will make the next series or two alittle louder to reahc out to 'yotes taht have more distance ot cover. NEVER START AT HIGH VOLUME!!!!

2) The calls I use/sounds I make depend on time of year. Mating season I try to sound like a female howling. maybe followed by a immature male. other times or locations I will use distress calls such as coyote, mouse squeaker, squirrel, rabbitt or woodpecker distress calls.

3) If you're calling coyotes with a howler, I would think that you'd have a slim to none chance of having a fox come in. I wouldn't rule it out, but fox and coyotes don't cohabitate very well. Your squirrel, rabbit, mouse squeaker, and woodpecker distress calls will draw more fox.

just like lep with a mouth call I end up calling and sitting at one place for 10-15 minutes.

my johnny stewart electric call goes for 1 min then i wait and play again about 1 min later.

One hting i've learned in calling the wind is to make your way up wind, and in a 15 mph or greater wind, I call up to 10 minutes; then make my way upwind up to 175-200yds and start over with the calling. that wind really muffles everything!

My sets last anywere from 15-30 min. Mabe a little more with the 5-10min "quiet time" at the end. It never suprises me when a late dog comes in after the calling is long over. Helps to keep from spooking them when you change locations to give it a little time before moving.

CAll only when the winds are calm unless you are sure that you can cover the down wind side while calling. If you are not able to and the animal winds you the chances of calling that animal in again are nill. If you do call one in, KILL IT and DON'T MISS! Any time a coyote is shot at and missed while calling, aids in training a yote to not come in to a call ever again. Missing an animal happens, but try to make that shot count. So, use your head and call only when the conditions allow.

Thanks for the responses guys, I am hoping to make it out one of these nights now that the holidays are over. Another question I have is about gun choice. I have seen that in most videos/shows, the poeple calling have both a shotgun and a rifle. Can you do this in MN? I know carrying 2 firearms is a big no no for big game, but does that apply to coyotes and foxes? It makes sense to me to have the shotgun for the ones that sneak in close and the rifle for the ones that hang up.
