Fiberglass insulation smell?

Recommended Posts

Not to long ago I posted a question about adding insulation to my interior walls to help reduce the noise from one level to another.

I started putting in strips of fiberglass insulation and everything has gone smoothly....but the insulation has a rather noticeable chemical smell. Is this normal and if so, how long does it take to go away? I would assume once I get the rock up it will contain it...

No, I think I have it figured out now. The smell appears to be the adhesive or tar like substance that is used to hold the fiberglass to the paper backing. HD was having a sale on insulation and it was actually cheaper to go with this stuff with the vapor barrier instead of just plain old insulation. I opened the rest in the garage and I am going to give it a day or two to air out before continuing install.
