Thanks to the 2 guys that shot me!

Just got back from S.D. trip where all we did was ditch hunt. I don't condone what these guys did as it was completely wrong. But I get the sense from the other comments that this type of hunting is looked down upon. Unfortunately I don't own dogs and when all you have is acouple of guys walking a large swath of public land does not make sense. We follow the rules, know what is in the area and don't go on private land.

OK, physically not as bad as the title.

I was hunting a WMA in the hutch-Glencoe area, with my dog. I kicked up a couple Roosters that flew to a gravel road ditch maybe a 75 yards up, at the edge of the WMA. I dropped a foot on one of them with a hail marry shot. A White truck drove by, saw the birds landing and slowed a bit. They then drove off, so i thought. I made my way to i guess 30-40 yards from the road ditch, where the birds landed.

All of a sudden the white truck comes flying in, stops and 2 guys jump out, guns uncased and loaded. One runs into the ditch and one stays on the road. I grab my dog, and hold her still. Bird gets up, I am right in the line of fire, behind the bird. Pop, pop, one of the guys shoots, and all i can do is crouch down and hide my face. Next thing i know its like the sound of hail around me. The SOB sprayed me. I could feel a couple of his shot, hit my back, even with layers on and land all around me. I hear 2 more shots. Wait a second look up and see their dog retrieving 1 bird. They missed the second bird which luckly flew over the road, and not at me. The driver, who must have let their dog out, then picked them up, and off they went. When leaving they drove right past me, as i was pretty close and walking parallel to the road ditch.

I had on blaze orange, I could see them, so they could see me. I still cant believe this happened, my blood is still boiling. I guess i needed to vent on here. I hope no one else has or had this happen.

Must be something in the water in Hutch. I grew up there and had a very similar issue happen to my dad and I when I was 12. We were sitting in a road ditch hoping for some geese/ducks to fly over and get a shot. We had this monster mallard come out of the refuge only 10 feet off the ground and head toward this other guy who was sitting on the other side of a paved road. The bird saw him and flared right toward us. All of a sudden this dough head starts blasting away, across the tar road and into the game refuge at the bird. We hit the deck while the pellets hit the corn all around us. The bird dropped INSIDE the refuge. He goes in there and starts looking for the bird and he had the balls to say "aren't you going to help me look for it?" This was before the day of everyone having cell phones and my dad just said you better get out of here before I get in to call the DNR. The guy worked for the city of Hutch.

I dont understand why people are so greedy and will completely lose their mind over the chance to shoot an animal. Like your situation, someone could have gotten seriously hurt by their actions. They have no recourse.
