Slaty-backed Gull

This the 5th state record for Minnesota. When I got the word the gull was being seen at Canal Park in Duluth, I headed down there and shot about 50 photos of this rare gull. Slaty-backed Gulls nest in small numbers on the west slope of Alaska and are now slowly wondering east. This is a 3rd winter gull and will achieve breeding adult plumage this spring or early summer. The black on the tip of the bill, the brownish smudges on the coverts and black marks on the tail and brown streaks on head indicate its a 3rd winter gull.

Enjoy.
