if i go and buy a set of led christmas lights (rope) and put them in my portable and run them off a vex battery what is the best way to connect them to the vex battery

If you look throught the Ice fishing forum you will see a thread on this topic. DTRO even shows you how to wire in series. Or you have the option to purchase from the Outdoor Pro store lights that are ready to go.

If you use lights that are labeled for use as Xmas lights they run on 120 volts. You need to find something that will run on 12 volts DC. Or you could get an inverter to connect to the battery and then plug the rope light into the inverter.

If you get the ones with the alligator clips you can hook them right up to your flasher battery. Or a spare.

You can check out what Dtro did and I believe that if you figure out the costs and time, the Outdoor Pro store has them for less. They are also built for the ice fisherman and should last longer. Clips are included also.
