Tonneau covers?

Recommended Posts

I have never had a truck with a tonneau cover. I'm looking for opinions on if the ones with snaps are better or the ones with velcro? A hard cover is not a option. I do know that I want the bows that keep the top from sagging. I will be wanting to keep the rain and snow completely out as I will need to put luggage back there once in a while.

Thanks for any input.

Look up truck covers usa

and check out their retractables. I have one on the Tundra and love it. It's lockable, retractable, made of aluminum, able to withstand 500 lbs (standing on it in its closed position), offers great protection, doesn't flap or bounch when you're driving down the interstate, but that sob is expensive. $1300 from auto anything,

but on the flip side, I think their more attractive then a hard top tonneau, definately more versitile, and cost less.

The "access" tonneau covers are the soft rollup type ones. They have velcro down the sides and the bars in the middle. i put a new one on my 2000 pickup that worked awesome and was around $500, I traded that for a new car and a 97 pickup that had a access on it, and the velcro was worn out and wont "stick" anymore. if the velcro worked it would be just fine. Im looking into getting new velcro sewen on.

You will have to get a tailgate gasket to seal up around the tailgate, then it stayed dry and clean in the box.

extang full tilt. There a soft cover that lifts up like a hard cover with the help of two struts. If you need it out of the way you put the struts lift it up and pull it off, takes about 30 seconds. The first one I had had snaps. The one I have know is snapless. I actually prefer the snaps. Its so easy to remove it really doesn't matter i guess.

Truxedo low profile is what I just put on. I don't think you cold go wrong with the access either. I just liked how the cover barely sticks up over the bed. The velcro can also be replaced in one big strip that doesn't look like much of a chore at all. Installed the cover myself in about 10 minutes.

I bought my Access on craig's list for $150 -- met the guy and took it off his truck (a lease that he had to return to the dealer)..and put it on mine. He'd had it for 3 years, and I've had it for another 3 - still works and looks like new -- I have 3 young kids and we sometimes use the truck for traveling, which means with 3 kids in the back seat, EVERYTHING else goes in the bed -- luggage, toys, baby [PoorWordUsage], you name it. Never once had a problem with anything getting wet from snow/storms/etc.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
