if we are fishing walleyes i'll put about a 3 foot mono or flurocarbon leader usually 8lb test, sometimes 6 if their really finiky. If im fishing pike I'll use either a steel leader or 15-20lb mono.

All I have is a 6 inch steel leader tied right to my 30lb vinyl/rubberized tip up line. I only fish pike with tip ups and it has worked great for me in the past. Iced many fish over 10lbs (never broke off) and I think in the last 3 winters I have caught maybe 5 fish less than 8 lbs. Very amusing to me still but no complaints!

I use 3 feet of 20 lbs flexible/knottable wire. I snell the hook right to the wire so I get a more positive connection. About 6" above the hook I put about 1 1/2" of beads and a clevis/spinner blade in the middle of the beads, and pinch a split shot on each end to hold them all in place.

I've been home sick lately, so I've re-tyed all my tip ups and put new hooks on everything. Just need ice now. wink
