Portable House Modifications

It is VERY light. I pull mine by hand as well and I couldn't notice a difference. If you go to a store and find the stuff lift it up (next to nothing) and you won't use the entire roll of it to mod your portable. Well worth the time and investment in my opinion.

anyone install this on a hub style? would a square just on the ceiling that I could pop on and off be worth the trouble? I got a steal of a deal at the ice show last year but the thing is like a rain forest after an hour or two.

I was wondering the same thing. I bought a hub house after the ice season last year. I assumed adding reflectix would help with 1) retaining heat and 2) helping with light distribution but was wondering if it will it hold up with the way the house is folded down and stored and might add it this year. Anyone with a hub house use reflectix who can chime in? Does it add much to the total size when folded up? Does it fit back into the carrying case easily?

I just added some reflectix to my Eskimo QF3 and can't wait to try it out on the ice. It definitely helped with light distribution but the biggest perk should come with heat retention.

I know that some have said they don't think it would help enough because you still have 3 exposed sides...well if you place the back of the house so it's getting hit with the wind then the other sides shouldn't be affected much. The wind is what is going to wick away the most heat from the shack.

FYI, be careful: I wasn't careful enough and I put a 2" cut through my "canvas" while cutting slits for the velcro straps. (Ooops, Doh!) Stopped by a big box last night and bought a patch kit for $2.00 should be good to go now.

Nice work tsande00!

Where did you score those light bars from if you don't mind me asking?

Got them from a buddy at work who used to work for the manufacturer. They were free to me (actually I owe him a lunch), but one set is red and the other set is blue. I have each color on it's own switch. I was a bit nervous at first that the colored lights would be uncomfortable but it actually isn't bad at all. The blue all by itself is actually very easy on the eyes...easier than bright white even.

I am going to try these for the season...if I end up not liking them I'll probably order a couple strips of the H Kong lights everybody else seems to be happy with. Couldn't pass up the price of free though this time around.

Alright no picture yet, but I just added another modification to my flip over.

As previously mentioned, I have the Eskimo quick flip 3 with the bench seat. The biggest problem I had with this shack was that cold beverages and other items would constantly get knocked off the bench and spill all over inside my tub. NO MORE!

I found a low profile center console at Napa Auto parts for 3 bucks. It has 2 cup holders and some flat storage space on each side. I cut slits in the bottom on each side of the console unit about 1" wide by 1/8" tall with a utility knife and then made some short straps by cutting up an old ratchet strap. I added velcro to the ends of the new short straps.

I then threaded the new straps through the slits of the console and wrapped the straps around the bench seat to keep it securely in place. IT IS AWESOME. It works perfectly and I can still fold the backrest up and down without removing the console unit. If I need to fish three guys on the bench or sleep on the bench I can simply unvelcro the 2 straps and it comes right off.

My first idea was to buy the clam console and hang it off the front of my tub, out in front. Problem with this though is that it ends up being so low to the ground a guy needs to bend over just to set his soda pop down. Also creates a tripping hazard and eats up valuable floor space. My new console sits nicely right on the bench between 2 fisherman. A great place to put beverages, flashlights, jigs, spring bobbers, etc while fishing.

Best $3 upgrade a guy could do with a bench seat and it closely mimics the Clam console. (which wouldn't work with a bench seat)

I'll try to take some pictures tonight.

Not interested in doing a full blown Mod on my Otter Lodge, but for sure would like to add some sort of console similar to the Otter Caddy (the Caddy doesn't fit on the old style seats).

Any ideas???

I know it has been discussed before, but I can't find what I am looking for. How do you secure auger in the tub of flip type house. I can do small mod but do not want to do something bigger mod.

Thanks in advance!

+1

I've been wondering the same thing.

One idea I had was to use some 3/4" plywood and cut notches 1" wide X 4" deep for the auger to rest in...sort of like a cradle. I see a few potential problems with this idea though and have been hoping for something better.

Here is a "diagram", lol:

[!!]

With the '[' and ']' being the edges of the tub and the '!' being the plywood inserts with notches cut out.

My guess is with 3/4" plywood you could secure it enough with some epoxy (PL200?) and small lags through the sides of the tub into the plywood.

Again...there has to be something better then this plan...probably better looking too then plywood.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
