5HP Techumseh Snow King-1990

luckydave

Question

This engine starts right away and runs well except when the choke is shut off all the way-then it dies. This occurs even after it has been running a while. Is this just an idle speed adjustment or something else? The plug is good and the carb was cleaned out with spray cleaner. Any ideas are very welcome and thanks in advance.

Starving for fuel.

Start with the fuel line for cracks and leaks.

Snow King must be a snow thrower?

Need to know the model number of the engine because there are a lot of different type carbs used.

Could as simple as an adjustment.

When you say cleaned was it taken apart and did you get every thing cleaned?

The symptom you describe would tell me that the high speed circuit in the carb is clogged. Spray cleaner would have no effect here unless you took the carb apart and sprayed out the passages. Try turning the high speed needle all the way in until it seats (note how many turns!) and then adjust it back out. This may break up any bit of gunk stuck in the needle and clear the obstruction. If that does not work it's time to pull the carb for cleaning!

It sounds like you need to clean out your fuel system. Empty and clean the tank, clean out the hoses, and throuughly clean the carb.

The Tecumseh engine model is HS40 or HS50-it's a 5 hp 24" snowblower. The carb was cleaned with spray cleaner-not taken apart. It runs good at full throttle and except when choke is completely turned off. I will try to adjust the high and low speed carb jets next. Thank you.

Float type carb. Here is a quick way that is almost as thorough as a removal and complete dismantle.

Turn the fuel off or the remove the tank.

On the bottom of the carb there is an main adjustment screw assembly. Leave the screw alone and back the nut out. The bowl will drop.

Take a look at the inside of the bowl. While the bowl is off you might as well flush out the inlet valve. Put a container under the carb to catch the gas. Turn the gas on and let it run out the carb. Turn the gas off. Turn the main adjustment screw all the way in till it just stops while counting the turns, don't tighten it. Now back it out. Clean the needle with carb cleaner and a rag. Keep repeating to get all the varnish off. Clean the piece the needle screwed into. Carb cleaner and pipe cleaner to get the inside clean. If you look close there is anther hole going through across the main hole.

Clean it with a small wire and carb cleaner. Keep repeating.

If you look under the carb body in the center of the float there is a hole that would line up with the main needle. Clean that nossel out. Look on the side of the carb body there is an idle spsed adjustment screw, count the turns in and then take it out. Clean it with carb cleaner and spray cleaner into that hole.

Keep track of the pieces. There will be springs, tiny O rings, brass washers, When I mention clean something that means take the time to get it clean. Don't get any carb cleaner on the o-rigs or rubber washers.

Surface Tension,

Thanks for all the detailed instruction. Now I have to get up enough nerve to tackle it. Another thing I have to do is find out where the h*** Twig, MN is. I really appreciate all the input and the fact everyone is so helpful with ideas. Thanks a bunch!
